Wednesday 31st: Montreuil to Beauvais (135km)

I was the only one at breakfast this morning. The room had a stage in it which furthered my suspicion that the hotel was an old theatre. Had a quick look around the village before heading off. The fortified walls of the town were enermous and were very thick and doubled up.

The weather this morning was pleasant and the scenry passed quickly by as I made the 45km journey south to Abbeville. I stopped for lunch in the town. I read that it had been badly bombed and its modern red brick centre contrasted shaply with Montreuil. It was only lunchtime on Halloween but already some over zealous kids were out trick or treating.

The road to Beauvais was long but scenic and I found myself arriving after dark. After checking in at the very central Hotel Cygne I went looking for some traditonal french food for dinner. after a good hours roaming I was dissapointed.
The centre was mainly shops and I couldn't spot anywhere I wanted to eat. In the end the window of a local chinesse tempted me. It was a take away and it only had three tables. I order the food "sur place" and sat down.
No sooner than I heard the ping of the microwave the food arrived in a plastic bowl on a plate. Not the best presentation but the 1 euro heineken made up for it. The shop was very brightly lit, as if they were shooting a movie. There was only one other dinner with me and as time went on I realised that it wasn't two women having a loud chat but one mad women shouting loudly at herself.
I dont think she wad drinking but her mood varied from utter joy to deep sorrow. Every now and again the owner would shout "would you ever shut up" at her. This was not my idea of fine french dining so I bid adieu and wandered back to the room hoping to catch the end of Star Wars in french.
